DIY Upholstered Headboard

I've been working on the vignettes in the living room but they just aren't quite ready for posting yet! So until then, I decided to show the Ballard Design upholstered headboard that we wanted but couldn't afford so we had to do a DIY version!

It turned out just awesome and I am so happy with how it looks here in the room! I especially love the cost of $75 compared to $500! I did change the shape somewhat because our room is full of "curves".



You are also getting a sneak peek at the progress in the bedroom! I began the master bedroom remodel at the same time as our master bath because they are connected. I still have a few more things to do before I show more pictures. I definitely need to work on my pillows before the final "reveal"!

Let me give you the basic steps we went through to make this headboard.

Mr. Creative measured and cut the curve I was wanting from MDF. We have a queen size bed and he measured for the size based on where we wanted it.

I purchased the dense foam from Hancock Fabrics when they had it 40% off. Foam is so expensive. We had to cut pieces to fit at the arch top with the electric knife.

First layer is a canvas drop cloth that I purchased at Walmart. I believe it was the 6x9 size. I washed it with bleach and dried it. After having it folded for so long, I had to iron it and use a damp cloth to get the creases out which is the damp spots you see there!

Well, we got carried away and I didn't take pictures of every step! So I will walk through what we did up to this point. 

We laid quilt batting on top of the drop cloth, then the foam and last was the MDF. We began by pulling the fabric tight, stapling from one end to the other leaving space to finish the corners last. Mr. Creative had to do the corners because I just couldn't get them to look straight and neat.

I wanted nail head trim but the budget just didn't allow for it. I decided I would hot glue brown braided trim to the fabric instead. Measuring two inches from the edge, we drew a line so I knew where to glue the trim.

The trim went quickly because you can't waste any time when using a hot glue gun!

Mr. Creative made a French cleat to hang the headboard. Here is an example of a French cleat and a link to instructions to make one from wood.

I have so many projects going on and it would help if I could just finish one room before jumping to the next project. Am I the only one that does this?
